Single Mom Dresses as Dad for “Donuts with Dad” Event in Viral Parenting Story

Texas single mom Yevette Vasquez went viral after dressing up as a dad so her son wouldn’t miss out on his school’s Donuts with Dad event. A heartwarming parenting story about love, humor, and going the extra mile.

Some single mothers often say they play both mom and dad in their children’s lives.

That was exactly the case for Texas mom Yevette Vasquez, who decided to go all in when her son Elijah’s school hosted a Donuts with Dad event.

To make sure her son didn’t feel left out, Vasquez dressed up as a dad — complete with a baseball cap, plaid shirt, fake mustache, and even a touch of cologne.

Laughing, she told CNN: “It’s the first time I’ve ever dressed as a man. This is something we’ll remember forever.”

Her Facebook post of the moment quickly went viral, shared thousands of times.

The Dad Outfit

When Vasquez and Elijah first pulled into Sue Crouch Intermediate School, she noticed the unusually full parking lot. That’s when Elijah reminded her about the doughnuts event and teased, “You’ve got 10 minutes before the bell rings.”

Since they lived just a block away, they rushed home and created the dad look in seven minutes. Elijah helped by lending his plaid shirt, picking out the mustache, and shaping her style.

“He kept saying, ‘No, you still look like a girl!’” Vasquez recalled.

The Reaction

Back at school, most dads welcomed her playful disguise.

“Most of them thought it was funny, supportive, and really sweet,” Vasquez said. “Though I could feel a few weren’t entirely comfortable with it.”

But for Elijah, it meant everything. “He was so excited, even shaking, and said, ‘Thank you.’ I told him, ‘I did this for you, so you can enjoy the day.’”

The story resonated online too, with single parents worldwide sharing similar stories of parenting challenges and victories.

For Vasquez, the effort was about more than just a costume — it was about making sure her son didn’t feel left out again, after missing other dad-centered school events.

“I saw that same sad look on his face before, and I didn’t want it again. I wish I’d done this sooner,” she said.

Ironically, despite dressing up for Donuts with Dad, Vasquez never ate her own doughnut — too nervous, she gave it to Elijah.

Will she do it again?
“Probably,” she admits, since her two younger sons now want their ‘dad’ to show up when it’s their turn for Donuts with Dad.
