- Prepare Apples:
- Wash the apples thoroughly under running water to remove any wax coating. Dry them completely.
- Remove the stems from the apples and insert wooden skewers or sticks into the stem end of each apple. Make sure the sticks are firmly secured.
- Prepare Candy Coating:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, light corn syrup, and water. Stir well to combine.
- Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly to dissolve the sugar.
- Once the mixture comes to a boil, insert a candy thermometer. Continue to cook the syrup, without stirring, until it reaches the hard crack stage, about 300°F (150°C). This usually takes around 15-20 minutes.
- Add Flavor and Color:
- Once the syrup reaches the desired temperature, remove the saucepan from the heat.
- Stir in the vanilla extract and red food coloring, if using. Mix until the color is evenly distributed.
- Dip Apples:
- Working quickly but carefully, dip each apple into the hot candy syrup, tilting the saucepan as needed to coat the apple evenly.
- Allow any excess syrup to drip back into the saucepan, then place the coated apple onto a parchment-lined baking sheet to cool and harden.
- Cool and Serve:
- Let the candy-coated apples cool completely at room temperature until the candy coating hardens, usually about 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- Once the candy coating is set, your old-fashioned candy apples are ready to enjoy! Serve them immediately, or wrap them individually in wax paper for later enjoyment.
These old-fashioned candy apples are a classic treat perfect for Halloween, fall festivals, or any time you’re craving something sweet and nostalgic. Enjoy!
