After Lucy’s husband died, she moved in with her son Connor and his wife Eve.
Lucy, who was old and delicate, needed someone to be with her for a while until she could come to terms with her situation and be prepared to move forward.
When she went to live with her son, he chose to have her stay on the ground floor so she wouldn’t have to use the stairs due to her knee problems.
Connor worked in the technology industry and spent many hours at work, while his wife stayed at home. This means that Lucy and Eve spent a lot of time together during the day, and they also got along well.
While Eve was doing most of the housework, Lucy always offered to help, either with the chores around the house or in the kitchen.
Eve was open to receiving help from her mother-in-law, but over time, she ended up letting Lucy do most of the work.
A few days before Christmas, Eve was at home watching TV. She asked Lucy to do the laundry and then go buy groceries for dinner that night and for Christmas dinner as well. Nine individuals will be arriving. “I will give you the money before you go.”
Lucy was very surprised by this request. The two always went shopping together, and Lucy was too delicate to shop for groceries alone.
At that moment, Lucy understood that if she continued to live in the house, she would increasingly feel like a servant.
She thought it was time to go back home, but she wanted to teach Eve a lesson first.
Lucy’s house was not vacant then. When she went to live with her son and his wife, she chose to rent out her house and give the rental income to Connor. Therefore, she was unable to leave Connor’s house at that time, even if she desired to do so.
For Christmas, Lucy made all the food, including the side dishes and the sweets.
When the visitors came, they all complimented Lucy for her cooking.
“Aunt Lucy,” one of her son’s friends said, “This food is really good!” “Did you make all of this by yourself?”
“I did, Ross,” Lucy replied with a smile.
“Lucy,” Eve said, “I didn’t think you would make so many tasty dishes!”
“Thanks, Eve,” Lucy said, thinking that the guests’ words would make Eve wonder why she chose not to assist with dinner and left Lucy to do everything alone.
After dinner, Lucy went to the kitchen to clean the dishes, and that’s when Eve came up to her.
“Lucy, can we have a conversation?” Eve inquired her.
“Of course,” Lucy replied. “What are you thinking about, Sweetheart?”
“I didn’t know all the things you do at home.” I wanted to relax, so I gave you more work to do. “I apologize,” Eve said.
Lucy smiled when she realized that Eve had learned her lesson. “It’s okay,” she said, “I want to help with chores, but I’m getting older and my knees are not as strong as they used to be.”
“We work well together,” Eve said. “Come on, let’s go relax.” “I will prepare a cup of tea for you.”
